What Do We Know about Xcode 4.0? A Lot!

Xcode 4 is still for WWDC participants only, but according to twitter search, what do we know about it? Here's what I've found:

  • Wow. Xcode4 has skins! Never saw that one coming.
  • what do you think of the code snippet feature of xcode4? LOVE IT!
  • git support in xcode4, WOOOOOT! ^_^
  • Xcode4 summary thus far: SDI interface, better intellisense
  • The new XCode has a time-machine like time-slider for showing you how your code changed over time.
  • xcode4 using new LLVM compiler. 2x compile speed improvement. up to 25% runtime speed improvement. on iphone up to 60%. bye gcc
  • New is the lldb debugger, a replacement for gdb
  • The new version of the developer tools consolidates the Xcode editing tools and Interface Builder into a single application

And more:

  • Xcode4 is fantastic. The best release ever #wwdc
  • oh man. NDA applies, but I can tell you Xcode4 will bring you back to mac coding. so. sweet.
  • Just installed xcode4...at last they listened to developers

Disclaimer: I'm not WWDC attendee

Predictions And Reality

About a month ago I made some predictions about Apple's event on January 27th. Let's take a look on the results:

- "iTablet": 100%
Yep, iPad is there

- iPhone OS 3.5/4.0 (should be the same OS for tablet, makes sense): 100%
OK, the version number is 3.2 but should be 4.0 when it's ready. So yes, this is the same OS as for iPhone.

- iLife '10: 90%
This is a weird one, because january is the annual time for iLife updates.

- some TV deals: 50%
- own maps app/service: 20%
- Safari update (it's time): 20%

100% missed :-)

- I don't believe the rumors about the "iSlate" name. It sounds awful.
100% true. Although I don't like the name iPad either.

Gruber: It’s Only Rock and Roll Event Prelude

John Gruber on It’s Only Rock and Roll Event Prelude:

The most important iPod, the Touch, is getting a camera, and I believe will match the iPhone 3GS on processor speed and RAM. Three sizes: 16/32/64 GB for $199/299/399. iPhone OS is the future of the “iPod” brand. The Nano is getting a camera. The Classic isn’t going away just yet — I think they’ll bump the capacity from 120 to 160 GB and keep the price at $249.

Regarding the Flash Version in Snow Leopard

John Gruber on Regarding the Brouhaha Over the Version of Flash in Snow Leopard:

According to VersionTracker, Adobe released version 10.0.32.18 of Flash on July 30. Snow Leopard went GM on Friday August 7.

...

Does anyone really think that Apple should have replaced the single-crashiest piece of software in Mac OS X with a new untested version just eight days before going GM?

BTW does anybody having Windows 7 (final) knows the version of flash player installed on it?

Apple already testing Mac OS X 10.6.1 Update

Kasper Jade on Apple already testing Mac OS X 10.6.1 Update:

Three people familiar with the matter say the Mac maker issued the first external builds of Mac OS X 10.6.1 to a select group of developers on Monday, September 1st. The move comes just four days after Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard hit retail shelves.

...

Some of the most common problems encountered by users of Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard are believed to be out of the company's hands, involving third-party printer drivers and application incompatibilities.
